How Children Are Affected By Food Allergies
In the past there were not near as many people with food allergies as there are today. Adults as well as children have some very serious food allergies. Some people are allergic to one food and some are allergic to a variety of foods. Usually these allergies are to very specific foods. Foods like strawberries, and also foods like gluten, which has a much larger variety of foods involved. Some food allergies are dangerous and this can be potentially fatal especially in children. These are a few examples of how children are effected by food allergies.
At School
For children with food allergies school can be a big problem. If a child has a food allergy to peanuts it can be life threatening. In the past a child would have had to deal with this on their own. Due to the fact that there is a rise in food allergies some schools have made drastic changes to become a peanut free environment. These schools do not have items in the cafeteria with peanuts in them or sell any items that contain peanuts. They also try to prevent other students from bringing items that contain peanuts. This may seem like extreme measures to take, especially for the students that are not allergic, But the students with a food allergy could die even from airborne particles from peanuts.
There are, however, not many scholls that enforce this policy. Most schools do try to help with the students that do have food allergies. Some schools will have a table in the lunch room that is a peanut free table. This is meant to keep the allergic students away from harmful foods. Some people think that this is just isolating these children. They think that because a child has a food allergy they should not be forced to be away from their friends.
At Home
If you are someone who has a child with a food allergy, it goes without saying that you will do anything to avoid a food allergy symptom. Some symptoms of a food allergy may include diarhea, vomiting, hives, swelling, and possibly even anaphylactic shock and death. Home is also a place you have to fight against the onset of an allergic reaction to food. You have to be diligent to keep you child away from the foods they are allergic to. Sometimes it is necessary to change the diet of the entire family to completely get ridof the allergen in the home.
After being diagnosed with a food allergy, a child will be in a constant battle against the effects of a food allergy. The best defense is to be aware and well educated.
