How Children Are Affected By Food Allergies

Friday, January 9th, 2009

In the past there were not near as many people with food allergies as there are today. Adults as well as children have some very serious food allergies. Some people are allergic to one food and some are allergic to a variety of foods. Usually these allergies are to very specific foods. Foods like strawberries, and also foods like gluten, which has a much larger variety of foods involved. Some food allergies are dangerous and this can be potentially fatal especially in children. These are a few examples of how children are effected by food allergies.

At School

For children with food allergies school can be a big problem. If a child has a food allergy to peanuts it can be life threatening. In the past a child would have had to deal with this on their own. Due to the fact that there is a rise in food allergies some schools have made drastic changes to become a peanut free environment. These schools do not have items in the cafeteria with peanuts in them or sell any items that contain peanuts. They also try to prevent other students from bringing items that contain peanuts. This may seem like extreme measures to take, especially for the students that are not allergic, But the students with a food allergy could die even from airborne particles from peanuts.
